Violent conflicts have been part of Nigeria’s history and the reoccurring of such incidences have been attributed to factors such as communal feuds, interplay of plitics, religion, ethnic tensions, clamour for self-determination and reasons of resource control and economic independence of some nationalities. Contrary to the prevalent opinion of associating violent extremism to religious and tribal differences, many of the violent conflicts in Nigeria “are  premised on economic, social, and political issues relating to wealth distribution and inter-ethnic relations, location of local government headquarters. It is also noted that violent conflicts involved civilians, armed forces, irregular civilians, [armed civilians] and in this type of conflict, civil unrest abounds. In recent years, these incidences of conflicts and violent conflicts have become more complex with the rise in violent extremism. SARVE Policy Brief gives an indepth overview on this.
