AAN TWG Seven-Point Recommendations

Downloads

The AAN TWG Seven-Point Recommendations focus on judicial accountability in Nigeria's post-election justice system. The document highlights citizens' growing interest in electoral justice due to controversies surrounding election results, the role of courts, and concerns about the neutrality of election management bodies like INEC. To address these issues, the Technical Working Group (TWG) proposed seven key recommendations, including reforms in pre-election and election matters, legal technicalities, judicial appointments, corruption in the judiciary, inconsistencies in judicial rulings, the culture of accepting election outcomes, and the role of citizens in electoral justice. These recommendations aim to enhance transparency, judicial independence, and public trust in the electoral process.

Key proposals include ensuring that pre-election cases are resolved before elections, limiting the levels of judicial appeal for election petitions, and amending laws to enhance the accountability of judges handling electoral cases. Other reforms involve strengthening judicial independence by improving appointment processes, increasing judges' remuneration, and implementing stricter disciplinary measures. The report also calls for better public education on election litigation, live coverage of court proceedings, and stricter disqualification measures for candidates and parties involved in electoral offenses. These measures are expected to foster a more credible electoral system and restore public confidence in Nigeria’s democracy.
