Empowering the Dalori Community through Skill Acquisition: Hadiza’s Story

Hadiza

Dalori a community in Jere LGA of Borno State once deeply affected by the devastating activities of Non-State Armed Groups (NSAG) seven years ago, has faced significant challenges, especially for its women and girls. The ongoing economic situation in the country has left many in Dalori stranded and unemployed, exacerbating their vulnerability and hindering their recovery especially young women.

In response to this dire situation, ActionAid Nigeria, through the Strategic Partnership Agreement II project partner, Hall Mark Leadership Initiative (HALI), identified Dalori as a community in critical need of assistance through a thorough household assessment.

HALI enrolled 50 women and girls, along with 25 young boys, into various skill acquisition centers.

These centers offered training in traditional cent (Turaren Wuta), liquid soap making, and detergent production. Over three months, beginning from January to April of 2024, the beneficiaries underwent intensive training, equipping them with the skills to produce these items independently. The knowledge and skills gained from these training courses have now become a sustainable source of income for these individuals, significantly boosting the local economy.

As a follow-up on the training's impact on the community and beneficiaries, we met with Hadiza Abdullahi.

Hadiza Abdullahi, is a 20-year-old living with her parents. Before this opportunity, she struggled to afford basic necessities like sanitary pads, a common issue known as period poverty. Period poverty affects countless girls and women, preventing them from participating fully in daily activities, including attending school and work. This lack of access to sanitary products can lead to embarrassment, health risks, and a significant loss of opportunities. Now, with the skills and support gained from the training, Hadiza not only supports herself but also provides for her family, breaking the cycle of poverty and ensuring a healthier, more dignified life for herself and those around her.

“Before the training, I saw myself as a burden to my parents because I was doing nothing to earn money. I had no skills or education to fall back on, which left me feeling hopeless and dependent. This intensive three-month training course changed everything for me. I learned valuable skills that empowered me to earn income and support my family. Now I can produce traditional scents and soap which I sell to people in the community. I now contribute to my household expenses and even save for my future. This experience has provided me with financial independence and boosted my confidence and sense of purpose. I am grateful for this opportunity, which has opened up new possibilities for a better, self-sustaining life.”

Hadiza Abdullahi's journey is a shining example of the power of skill acquisition and community support. As a result of this successful intervention, she has achieved a remarkable transformation, becoming self-reliant and resilient. She now faces financial challenges with confidence and is an inspiring example to others in her community. The training has not only empowered Hadiza but also injected new economic vitality into Dalori Community, showing that with the right opportunities, individuals and communities can break the cycle of poverty and build a brighter future.
